Hei Mahi
- As a listening activity read the poem to the whole class. Each student has eight strips of paper. Their task is to write the poem (dictation) verbatim on the strips as they listen to you reading the poem. One sentence per strip. Their task is then to order the strips of paper so that the poem matches the original.
- In pairs students create hand actions to accompany each line of the poem. Each pair performs their actions to another pair as they recite the poem.
- Then, each pair will secretly choose an action to perform. They perform it to the other pair whose task is to identify which line of text the hand action relates to.
- Tell the class, “Kei te whai tātou i te tauira o tēnei kōrero. Engari, kia tuhituhi tātou mō tētahi hoa kē. Nā reira, he aha ētāhi kupu hei āwhina i a tātou.” List these descriptive words or phrases on the whiteboard. Randomly group the students into pairs. List students’ names individually on pieces of paper and place in a kete. Each pair will draw out one name. Tell them, “Ko tā koutou mahi he whakawhiti whakaaro mō tēnā hoa.” Use Timed Talking to share thoughts. Then tell them, “Me tuhituhi tahi i tētahi kōrero mō tēnā hoa kia mau ngā whakaaro matua mōna.” Each pair then shares their writing with another pair. Each pair will then draw another name from the kete and repeat the process.
