Hei Mahi
- Tell the students, “Ko tā koutou mahi he whakaaro i tētahi pikitia hei whakaahua i tēnei kōrero. Katia ō koutou whatu ka whakarongo mai.” Students listen as you read the poem to them. They may want to hear the poem again. When finished, their task is to paint a picture to illustrate the poem.
- When the paintings are done, randomly group the students into pairs. Each student explains their painting to their partner. “Ko te mahi he whakamārama i ngā pikitia. Me mahi takirua.” The pairs then share their explanations with different pairs. (It is important that students understand this exercise is about being creative and to respect others’ work and whakaaro.)
- As a class choose a respected person from the community. Students suggest words or descriptive phrases about that person. List these on the whiteboard. Randomly group the students into pairs. The task for each pair is to write a poem describing that person from the community using as few words as possible. “Ko tā koutou mahi he tuhituhi i tētahi kōrero mō ________________(community person). Ko te wero, me iti te kupu, engari me nui te kōrero.“ Encourage students see how the author has done this.
