Te kaupapa matua o He Kohikohinga 45
The main subject of this book is Matariki, the beginning of the new year in the Māori calendar. (In 2006, this is on the 27th of June. However, in Invercargill Matariki appears later, it is not visible on the horizon for another two weeks.)
Te whānau marama
Te whānau marama consists of the sun (Tamanuiterā), moon (marama), and the stars (ngā whetū).
There are different versions of the whakapapa of te whānau marama. One version is that Ranginui and Papatūānuku are the parents. In other versions they are the grandparents.
