This is the online version of Mā te pouako, Teachers' notes for He Kohikohinga 36, which was originally published by Learning Media for the Ministry of Education in 2002.

He Kohikohinga 36 targets students from middle to senior primary school, written specifically, but not exclusively for students who are educated in Māori immersion contexts. He Kohikohinga 36 whilst providing a range of stories for use by classroom teachers, has selected a main theme by which all writings have been based. The main theme of this series is water, and may be used in conjunction with a number of related units, for example, water, water conservation, health and safety, to name a few. The stories and ideas contained within He Kohikohinga 36 are designed to support a reading and writing programme and can also be used to support a thematic approach to teaching. All ideas contained within these teachers’ notes are suggestions only, and teachers and students are encouraged to adapt ideas to suit their own learning contexts and interests.

This series introduces a new idea whereby Wai Marie (a water maiden) provides ideas and interacts with her readers throughout the book. She attempts to engage her readers both in an interactive and motivating way, offering commentary and ideas throughout.

Te marautanga reo Māori:

He Kohikohinga 36 is aimed at level 3 of the marautanga reo Māori. The following activities and suggestions therefore have been aligned to the relevant whāinga paetae and ngā pūkenga at level 3. Within the suggested activities sections the marautanga reo Māori page numbers are indicated.

Please note:

To gain full benefit from He Kohikohinga 36 it is advisable that teachers attempt to work with some of the language features and ideas contained within these. The more students work with words both in reading, writing, and talking the greater their retention and later use of these features. The authors cannot emphasise enough the importance of providing a language rich environment by which students can experiment with, and practise freely newly acquired skills and ideas. Another important feature of a good reading programme is the planning and preparing for linking both reading and writing.
