Hei Mahi

  1. Use guided reading with an instructional group. Tell them, “Ko He Taura Aroha te ingoa o tēnei kōrero. He aha pea te kaupapa o tēnei kōrero?” Students discuss in pairs. Then state the purpose, “I tēnei rā kei te ako tātou mō ngā kare-ā-roto.” Before reading each page say, “I a koutou e pānui ana, kimihia ngā kare-ā-roto.” All students then silently read that page. After reading the page, revisit the purpose of the lesson and tell the children to share their thoughts with someone sitting next to them. Encourage them to explain which words or phrases carry those emotions.
  2. In pairs students create a role play for this story. Their task is to display the emotions within the story. Each pair performs for another pair. The audience (pair) watches to see if there is a match between the emotions within the story and the body language of the performers.
  3. In pairs students plot the emotions of the punua pūngawerewere on a graph. Then each pair shares and explains their graph to another pair.
