This text gives step-by-step instructions for creating the string pattern known as Matariki.

Hei mahi

  1. In pairs, the students:
    a. take turns reading out the instructions and making the pattern
    e. discuss each step and the positioning of the hands and string.
  2. The students write a report of the progress they made or the frustrations they encountered. They could also record the names of students who were helpful and who demonstrated patience, tolerance, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
  3. Photocopy and cut out the photographs (without text). The students arrange the photographs in sequence, then check their work by using them as a guide to creating the Matariki string pattern.
  4. The students show members of another class how to make the Matariki pattern. Alternatively, the students could create a star pattern of their own and show their group or class how to make it.

The students are able to make the Matariki pattern. Cooperative skills are an important component of this activity.

How to make the Matariki pattern

To make this pattern you need a piece of string 1.5 metres long. Tie the two ends together.

  1. Place the string around the back of your little fingers and your thumbs.
  2. Take the string that is in front of your palms on to your index fingers.
  3. Turn your thumbs down to face toward your little fingers.
  4. Take the string on your thumbs behind the rest of your string pattern.
  5. Put your thumbs on the top of the string that goes around your little fingers.
  6. Turn your thumbs inwards towards you and upwards, so that you pick up the bottom string. Keeping the other ones on your thumbs as well, take them to the top. You should now have two strings on each thumb.
  7. Put the three fingers beside each of your index fingers into the bottom loops.
  8. Curl those three fingers of each hand over the loops immediately in front of them.
  9. Put your index fingers over the top of the two strings around the front of your thumbs. Pull them down and through the loops on your fingers. Release the other three fingers and spread the pattern with your index fingers and thumbs.
  10. There you have the seven stars of Matariki!
