Hei whakaihiihi

  • Compare different styles and designs of the t-shirts that the students are wearing.
  • Introduce the techniques of dyeing, screen printing, and appliqué.
  • Look at different examples of sewing and making patterns: such as using a needle, tāniko, and raranga.
  • Demonstrate with a sewing machine how to: thread a machine, and two basic stitches – straight and zigzag.
  • Discuss making your own clothes, and find out if any of the students have tried this.

  • In the book Design: Exploring the Visual Arts in Years 1–6 (2002), Gavin Bishop goes through the process of designing a book. The students could plan and produce an instructional manual on how to create their own t-shirt, or pillow or cushion cover.
