  • Introduce the title. Discuss where the child in the story lives.
  • Discuss with the students how they pack their belongings when they go on a trip.
  • Identify who: writes a list first; lays out all the clothes on the bed; groups belongings according to the number of days they will be away; gets their mother to pack.

Consider the questions below during the reading session.

  • "How did the boy organise his things?"
  • "Can you suggest other ways to pack items?"
  • "Is there a safer way to transport pets?"
  • Develop a character profile of the boy using the information in the story.

Hei wānanga

  • Write a list of all the things that he collected. Note singular and plural items.
  • Write a letter to the boy suggesting ideas on how to organise and pack for a holiday.
  • How would Māmā respond to the way that the car has been packed? List possible responses.
  • Discuss with the students different ways of transporting goods – box, suitcase, plastic bags.
  • Identify each item in the story and the best way to pack it into a car.
  • Discuss and demonstrate with the class safe ways of lifting objects.
  • Group the items – food, recreation equipment, necessary items, special items.

Hei mahi

Get the students to work in four groups and ask them what they would pack for:

  • skiing for a day
  • an overnight stay at a marae
  • camping for four days in a tent
  • going overseas for a week.

Share the group's suggestions.
