Activities to support the achievement objectives

1. Teacher directed

Preparation: Draw three columns on the blackboard:

(1)Nouns (2)Adjectives (3)Verbs

Read the poem to the class, and get students to repeat it.

Activity 1:

Re-read the first page. Identify the nouns, verbs and adjectives before moving on to the next page.

In groups of four, students copy the columns from the board into their books; find eight objects in the classroom and list them in the 'Nouns' column; brainstorm appropriate verb and adjective words to add to the other two columns.

Activity 2:

Give each student a sheet of newsprint and crayons. Tell them to divide the newsprint into six even squares.

Choose objects in the classroom and give students instructions to draw them e.g. "Tāia t/ētahi pōtae pango."

Working in pairs, students instruct each other to draw other objects.

Activity 3:

Read the story and get the students to repeat it. Divide the class into six groups. Hand out six large drawing sheets.

Assign one of the noun words in the story to each group. Discuss and draw:

  • Group one: Draw all the things that fly in the sky.
  • Group two: Draw all the different kinds of clouds.
  • Group three: Draw the sun rising and setting.
  • Group four: Draw lots of yellow things.
  • Group five: Draw lots of different fences.
  • Group six: Draw lots of things on the driveway.
