Hei mahi

  1. Photocopy the illustration as well as others that relate to Tangaroa. The students can listen as the teacher reads the poem. They can then view the illustrations and use Think, Pair, Share to decide which illustration matches the poem they have heard.
  2. Photocopy the poem. Choose four or five words (verbs, nouns or adjectives). Delete these words from the poem. Read the poem with a small group or the whole class. List the words that the students predict may have been omitted. In pairs, the students can discuss which of the predictions best suits each omission. Read the poem in full so that the students can measure their success.
  3. Ask the students to summarise the main ideas in the poem.
  4. Have the students read this and the poem 'Tangaroa.' In pairs, one student can then imitate one of the fish from either poem, and the other student can identify which fish is being imitated.
