Hei whakaihiihi

  • Ask the students what places in New Zealand they have visited during the holidays. On the side of a map of New Zealand record the childs' name and, using different coloured wool, link the name of the child to the place.
  • For those students who identified the South Island – in particular Picton, Kaikoura, Christchurch, or Hanmer – ask them what they did there.
  • Look at some pictures (cut out from travel brochures, magazines, and websites) of Kaikoura, Ōtautahi and Hanmer. In pairs the students identify two land features pertinent to each place.
  • Compare different examples of the diary form: handwriting, teachers' planning book, appointment book, newsletter.

Hei whakatā

  • Look at the way the date has been recorded. Are there any other ways of writing the date?
  • Read the first diary entry. Who are the taniwha of Wellington Harbour? How many islands did Kupe name in Te Whanganui a Tara? Have these questions ready before reading the rest of the text.
  1. He āhua mataku te kaituhi ki ngā kekeno, he aha ai?
  2. He kararehe pai ki tā te kaituhi. E mōhio ana koe ko tēwhea kararehe?
  3. E ai ki ngā kōrero rātaka, ko te aha te rā pai ki tā te kaituhi? He aha ai?

Hei wānanga

  • Discuss how the students would act around wild animals and falling snow.
  • Discuss with the students what the main features of a diary are.
