Te Manu Whakakite: Tarakiuta me Tarakitai (wh. 14–17)

Summary

This purākau from Ngāti Kahungunu tells of Tarakiuta and Tarakitai the grandchildren of Kahukuranui. They were brave youths. Someone became very jealous, and the twins were murdered. Their father, Kahutapere, set out to find who had done this. Two manu tukutuku and karakia showed the pā of the murderer of his sons.

Read the story. Then students write their own thoughts as if they were Kahutapere looking for his sons. What would they do?
