Ngā Āhuatanga o te Ākonga
Autaia tonu te maringi noa mai o ngā kupu. Ka whakaputa pātai noa, pātai hāngai tonu. Ka whakaputa kōrero noa ki ōna hoa. Ka mōhio he wā anō ki te kōrero ki tētahi, he wā anō ki te whakarongo. He mōhio ki te tuhi (me te tika o te tuhi) i ētahi whakaaro e rua neke atu rānei i roto i te rerenga kotahi. He mārama āna tuhinga.

Aheinga Reo- Ka tutuki te whānuitanga o ngā āheinga reo i roto i te wairua ngahau me te hiahia ki te whakawhitiwhiti whakaaro:

2. Ka mārama ia ki ngā reo ā-puta e pā ana ki ētahi kaupapa motuhake.

Te Tipu o te Puna Kupu – Ka tipu haere tonu te puna kupu me ngā āhuatanga katoa o te kupu:

4. Ka kōrero, kia whānui ake, kia mārama ake, kia hōhonu ake ngā whakaaro.  5. Ka whakamahi rautaki rapu māramatanga mō ngā tuhinga hou me ngā reo ataata hou ki a ia.
6. Ka pānui wahangū i ētahi wā.
7. Ka whakarite mahere hei whakatakoto whakaaro.
8. Ka mārama haere ki te āhua o te kōwae me te hua o te whakamahi tohu tuhituhi i roto i ngā tuhinga.

Hei Mahi

  1. Tell the students, “Ko tā koutou mahi he whakaaro i tētahi pikitia hei whakaahua i tēnei kōrero. Katia ō koutou whatu ka whakarongo mai.” Students listen as you read the poem to them. They may want to hear the poem again. When finished, their task is to paint a picture to illustrate the poem.
  2. When the paintings are done, randomly group the students into pairs. Each student explains their painting to their partner. “Ko te mahi he whakamārama i ngā pikitia. Me mahi takirua.” The pairs then share their explanations with different pairs. (It is important that students understand this exercise is about being creative and to respect others’ work and whakaaro.)
  3. As a class choose a respected person from the community. Students suggest words or descriptive phrases about that person. List these on the whiteboard. Randomly group the students into pairs. The task for each pair is to write a poem describing that person from the community using as few words as possible. “Ko tā koutou mahi he tuhituhi i tētahi kōrero mō ________________(community person). Ko te wero, me iti te kupu, engari me nui te kōrero.“ Encourage students see how the author has done this.
