Hei mahi

  1. a. Introduce the story by making links to the students personal experiences about moving from an old home to a new home. Begin with the following questions:
'Who has ever moved from one home to another?'
'Ko wai o koutou kua hūnuku whare?'
'What did you have to do?'
'He aha ngā mahi i whakaritea e koe?'
    'Who helped you move?'
'Ko wai mā i āwhina i a koe ki te hūnuku whare?'
    'Why did you move?'
'He aha te take i hūnuku whare koe?'
'How did you feel moving into a new house?'
'He aha ōu whakaaaro mō te hūnuku whare?'

    e. Give time for the students to think, pair, and share their own experiences of moving house. Share with the students the brief summary of what the story is about.

    i. The students read pages 5 and 6 and refer to the illustrations.
'What did they do when they realised it was still raining heavily?'
'I aha rātou, i te wā i te heke tonu mai te ua?'

    h. Ask the students to read pages 3 and 4.

    k. The students read page 7. Ask the following questions:
'What is the weather like now?'
'He pēhea te āhua o te rangi i nāianei?'

  2. a. Read the story to the students in sections.

    e. In pairs, the students retell the events of the story in sequence to each other using the pictures they have drawn.

    i. Choose two or three confident and willing students to share to the class.

  3. Read the story with the students. In pairs or small groups, the students discuss and write down three sentences to describe what they think the whakatauākī 'Ka mate kāinga tahi, ka ora kāinga rua' means.
  4. The students read the story and list all the reasons that would make people or animals move away from their homes and habitats. The students will use ideas from text, research using other places and own personal experiences to list reasons.
  5. In pairs, the students devise and draw a before and after plan for a new futuristic funky bedroom, or design a plan of a new house they would like to have in the future.
  6. The students present the story as a play.
